GRIFFITHS: 32 YEARS FOR FAKE FIREMAN RAIDERS

cnl_fireman_cctv_1_copy1.jpgDAGENHAM, ESSEX

Six members of a robbery team who dressed up as firefighters to hold-up shopkeepers at gunpoint were jailed for a total of 32 years today (Fri).

The well-drilled gang repeatedly raided cash-in-transit deliveries in east London and Essex armed with handguns, knives and crowbars before fleeing in stolen cars on false number plates.

The robbers, who included a former police officer and a convicted killer, were being watched by Flying Squad detectives as they staked out targets throughout 2010.

By December the gang changed their strategy by deploying two robbers inside shops, dressed in the distinctive firefighter's uniform and yellow helmet, as a ruse to gain access to safes and store rooms.

London fireman Russell Williams, 39, was recruited to supply bona fide uniforms to ex-police officer Gary Griffiths, 42, and Frank Nesbitt, 20, who wore the distinctive kit and armed themselves with a pistol to threaten shop staff and demand cash.

An ex-partner at Princess Diana's solicitors and the former owner of Claims Direct have been jailed for a total of 11 years and nine months for carrying out a 'spectacular' £17.5m fraud on a Swiss bank.

Lawyer Kevin Steele, 51, helped create the pretence businessman Michael Shephard, 50, had a £76.4m personal fortune in two offshore accounts.

The two men used phoney paperwork claiming the money was available as a security with Bank Julius Baer (BJB) to trick EFG Private Bank into paying out a huge loan

EFG was told the cash would be used to finance the development of three luxury Turkish resorts where England striker Wayne Rooney and Brazilian ace Ronaldinho wanted to buy villas.

cnl_p_orr_02.jpgACTON, KENSINGTON, WEST LONDON

A senior investigator was today (Fri) accused of ‘taking sides’ against Scotland Yard Commander Ali Dizaei during a corruption probe into the officer.

Peter Orr, who led an inquiry for the Independent Police Complaints Commission, ‘became far, far too close’ to web designer Waad Al-Baghdadi - who Dizaei is said to have framed for a bogus attack, it is claimed.

Dizaei, 49, is said to have inflicted injuries on himself to back up claims that the 26-year-old had assaulted him with a shisha pipe mouthpiece at Yas Persian restaurant in Kensington, west London.
