HALL: HMRC PRESS OFFICER SPARED JAIL FOR SUN LEAKS

KENTISH TOWN A disgruntled civil servant who leaked government secrets to The Sun in clandestine meetings with a reporter has been spared jail today (Fri). Jonathan Hall, 43, admitted he was 'seduced by the money and attention' when he met the newspaper's Whitehall editor Clodagh Hartley over glasses of wine to pass on information. He handed over parts of the 2010 Budget to Hartley before it had been announced, receiving £17,475 over more than three years from The Sun for his tips.

ST MICHAELS: TESCO WORKER STOLE £250 FROM THE TILL FACES JAIL

LEYTONSTONE, EAST LONDON A Tesco worker who stole £250 from the tills at the start of her shift is facing jail today (FRI). Christine St Michaels, 33, was spotted slipping money into her pockets as she filled up cash registers at the Leytonstone branch. She was confronted by customer manager Robert Sharman after he noticed the theft on the store's CCTV cameras on 24 April 2013. St Michaels at first refused to turn out her pockets but eventually revealed the £250 in cash.

MUTEGE: REISS SALES ASSISTANT STOLE £16K OF CLOTHES TO FLOG ON EBAY

HAMMERSMITH, WEST LONDON A Reiss sales assistant accused of stealing more than £16k worth of clothes and plotting to flog them on eBay appeared in court today (FRI). Conrad Mutege, 23, allegedly conspired with Zarete Sardinha, 21, to sell the sought-after fashion brand's designs to line their own pockets. Bosses launched a fraud investigation after discovering stock going missing from the Reiss store in Westfield, Hammersmith. The UK-based firm run by founder David Reiss is more than 40 years old and boasts a string of celebrity fans, including the Duchess of Cambridge.

HAYES: DECORATOR JAILED FOR PUNCHING INNOCENT PASSER-BY NI UNPROVOKED ATTACK

DAGENHAM, EAST LONDON A decorator who punched an innocent passer-by in the face in an unprovoked attack was jailed for eight months today (FRI). David Hayes, 39, was arguing with his partner in an alleyway in Dagenham, east London, when victim Steven White rushed past in the pouring rain. Hayes turned and hit Mr White in the mouth, knocking him to the floor, before hitting him again as he struggled to get up. The thug walked away but was arrested in nearby Lloyd Road with blood on his fist.

JONES: PAIR OF PARTY-GOERS FOUND WITH KNIVES IN CAR CLEARED AFTER INSISTING THEY WERE FOR CHEESE

CROYDON, SOUTH LONDON A pair of party-goers who claimed the knives found in their car were needed to cut up bread and cheese have been cleared of unlawfully possessing the blades. Dwayne Jones, 26, and 19-year-old Mikhail Akodu were found with two knives after police stopped their black VW Golf on Mead Place, Croydon. Akodu admitted owning a brown-handled lock knife found in the car's foot well, while Jones said he had borrowed a silver dinner knife from a friend. But the pair were each found not guilty of a single count of possessing a bladed article by an Old Bailey jury after claiming the potential weapons were used to chop up bread and cheese.

ATKINS: MURDER CASE ADJOURNED UNTIL APRIL

BROMLEY A psychiatric patient accused of killing his 71-year-old neighbour two days after he was discharged from hospital will next appear in court in April. Daniel Atkins, 31, allegedly murdered Ronald Parsons on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the victim's home in Cambridge Road, Bromley, Kent. Atkins has long-standing mental health issues and was sectioned under the mental health act on 6 December 2013. He had been released into the community by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust on February 28, 2014.

PHARO: SENIOR JUDGES ACCUSED OF 'BACK STAGE MANOURVRES'

WINDSOR, BERKSHIRE; BRENTWOOD, ESSEX; LONDON Senior judges have been accused of 'back stage manoeuvres' to remove the judge who tried six Sun journalists for corruption from the case. Judge Richard Marks QC oversaw the trial in Kingston of the senior staff at the tabloid who were accused of a decade of corruption by paying public officials for stories. When the jury failed to reach verdicts on four of the defendants, the judge ordered a retrial and said he would be in charge again. But today (Fri) it emerged he has forced out of the case by his 'elders and betters' and replaced by a fellow Old Bailey judge, Charles Wide QC.

SHRIMPTON: OLYMPIC BOMB HOAX BARRISTER IS JAILED

CENTRAL LONDON, AYLESBURY, WENDOVER A former immigration judge who sparked a security scare when he claimed German spies were plotting to destroy London with a nuclear warhead during the 2012 Olympics was jailed for twelve months today (FR). Barrister Michael Shrimpton, author of 'Spyhunter: The Secret History of German Intelligence' has a fixation on conspiracy theories focusing on the German intelligence services. As security fears mounted before the Games, the 57-year-old told a close colleague of former Defence Secretary Philip Hammond that a nuclear device was planted in a hospital in east London. The next day he telephoned the offices of David Lidington MP and repeated the bomb hoax in a fashion he likened to an episode of hit American TV show 24.

KHUBAIB: THREE MEN FACE CHILD PROSTITUTION RING TRIAL

PETERBOROUGH Three members of an alleged child sex ring are to stand trial later this month for forcing teenage girls into prostitution. Mohammed Khubaib, 43, Qadir Ahmed, 27, and Manase Motaung, 32, are accused of raping and molesting the girls between 2007 and 2013. More than twenty alleged victims, all who were aged between 13 and 17, are due to claim they were raped, sexually abused and forced into prostitution by the men. The three defendants deny 17 charges of child trafficking, forced prostitution, rape, and sexual activity with a child.

KHAWAJA: 'REGGIE PERRIN' JIHADI JAILED FOR 12 YEARS

WATFORD; EALING; SOUTHALL A British Muslim who faked his own death in Syria so he could return to the UK to raise funds to recruit Jihadists was jailed for 12 years today (fri). Imran Mohammed Khawaja, 27, who became a Jihadi recruitment 'poster boy', received firearms training at a base run by associates of British fanatics affiliated to ISIS. The bodybuilder, from Watford, Herts, entered the warzone after buying a flight to Kurdistan on 26 January last year. Khawaja, also known as Abu Daigham al Baritani and 'Barbie', was then reported as being killed in action on 3 June by the terrorist group Rayat al-Tawheed.

KAY: SUN'S CHIEF REPORTER IS A 'TRUE LEGEND' OF FLEET STREET, A 'SPLASH MACHINE' THAT ANY EDITOR 'WOULD HAVE KILLED TO HAVE ON THEIR PAPER'

CENTRAL LONDON Sun chief reporter John Kay is 'a true legend' of Fleet Street, a 'splash machine' that any editor 'would have killed to have on their paper', the Old Bailey heard today (fri). Kay is one of four Sun journalists on trial for paying for stories. Some of journalism's most influential and respected figures told the court that Kay is one the tabloid's greatest ever reporters. In 2001 and 2004 Kay was voted Reporter of the Year at the British Press Awards and he is the only journalist to have won the honour twice.
