CHRISTINE KAVANAGH: END OF CAREER FOR NURSE WHO FAILED TO ACT OVER RAPE CLAIM

LINCOLN A nurse who failed to take 'safeguarding measures' after a colleague claimed she had been raped by a hospital visitor has been struck off. Christine Kavanagh claimed she told her superior about the allegation but she merely replied it was 'just another bloody thing I've got to deal with' at Lincoln County Hospital. Kavanagh also failed to arrange cover when she left a ward to deal with a woman wielding a knife outside the premises. The Charlesworth ward, for acute admissions, should be staffed by two nurses at all times, the Nursing and Midwifery Council heard.

MICHAEL WOODWARD: BOGUS INVOICE SCAM

GRAYS/ONGAR, ESSEX Two businessmen ran a £5.8m tax scam by submitting scores of bogus invoices for the supply of labour to the rail industry, a court heard. Company director Michael Woodward, 29, allegedly teamed up with Richard Ponsford, 36, in a corrupt scheme to avoid paying a fortune in corporation tax over a seven year period. Woodward paid 'untaxed' cash into the back pockets of close relatives while Ponsford was paid a modest 'fee' for his help, jurors heard. The pair both deny cheating the public revenue between April 1, 2004, and March 31, 2011. Prosecutor Timothy Godfrey said Woodward's firms include Westview Rail Limited Westview Rail LUL Limited, Westview Rail Protection Services Limited and Westview Resources Limited.

FEWELL: BOUNCER BRAWLERS WALK FREE

HORNCHURCH, RAINHAM Two men who brawled with bouncers while commemorating the death of a friend thanked a judge as they were both spared jail. Michael Fewell and Nicky Donnelly, both 27, went out drinking with mates on 4 May this year – the birthday of a friend who had died three years earlier. After a long day of boozing and snorting cocaine, they ended up in the Sutton Arms pub in Hornchurch, Essex. They began tussling with the bouncers after their rowdy pals were thrown out, Snaresbrook Crown Court heard.

MEDVEDEVAS: FATHER SUBJECTED BABY DAUGHTER TO 'NUMEROUS AND TERRIBLE INJURIES'

PETERBOROUGH A Lithuanian father accused of murdering his baby daughter subjected her to 'numerous and terrible injuries', a court heard today (weds). Nine-week-old Aukse was found dead in her cot covered in red marks and bruises by her distraught mother Dzesika Urbikaite at their home in Peterborough, Cambs. She rushed her baby to hospital but doctors were unable to revive Aukse and she was pronounced dead on 5 September last year. The tiny girl is believed to have died from a catalogue of injuries inflicted in the hours before her death.

THOMAS BARRON: SAVILE INQUIRY LED TO ABUSE CLAIMS

ROMFORD A girl aged nine only realised she was being sexually abused after hearing about the Jimmy Savile inquiry, a court heard today. The girl said that Thomas Barron, 18, had been raping her for years but she was too scared to report him because she did not want to get into trouble. She eventually told her father when the two of them were walking to a fish and chip shop. Her father told Snaresbrook Crown Court he was worried after the girl’s elder sister said she had been looking at ‘unsuitable’ websites.

CHOWDHURY:ASDA WORKER FLEECED 87 YEAR OLD MAN

DAGENHAM, ESSEX; WELLING, KENT A teenage Asda worker who tricked an 87-year-old man into handing over his bank cards, then withdrew £500 from his account, was spared jail today (weds). Zaki Chowdhury, 19, helped a gang fool Alfred Bennett into believing his bank details has been compromised and he needed to replace his cards. One of the fraudsters called Mr Bennett posing as a police officer and told him that Bulgarian men had already stolen money from his account. Mr Bennett was told to cut up his bank cards and to give the officer his pin numbers.

SINGHAL:GP'S REACTION TO SUICIDE THREAT PATIENT 'UNACCEPTABLE'

LIVERPOOL A doctor's reaction to a woman who threatened suicide when she was attempting to get a sick note was 'totally unacceptable,' a tribunal found today (weds). Dr Arun Singhal, 65, told her 'you can go and jolly well do it then' and 'it's on the internet if you don't know how' after she told him she would kill herself. The woman, known only as Patient A, had attended The Surgery in Huyton, Liverpool to get a doctor's note to excuse her from attending court. She secretly recorded the conversation on her mobile phone, during which Dr Singhal can also be heard to brand her a 'disgrace to be a patient'.

MATOVU:MIDWIFE WENT HOME INSTEAD OF HELPING PATIENT WHO LATER DIED

ROMFORD, ESSEX A senior midwife who went home instead of helping a heavily pregnant woman and her unborn child who later died has been banned for three months. Rebecca Matovu failed to help ailing Sareena Ali, 27, despite desperate pleas from family that she was in agony at Queen's Hospital, Romford, Essex. Matovu ignored three calls from Ms Ali's panic stricken husband and brother, even refusing to help when the family resorted to banging on the nursing station doors. When she heard Mrs Ali was cold and unresponsive, Matovu went home instead of helping resuscitation efforts as her shift had ended, the Nursing and Midwifery Council heard.

COLFER: JAIL FOR BOYFRIEND AFTER HOSTAGE HORROR

PECKHAM A father-of-one who held his ex-girlfriend hostage and threatened to brand her face with an iron was jailed for four-and-a-half years today (Thurs). Wayne Colfer, 27, threatened to torture Helen Tariku, 24, if she did not hand over her mobile phone, electrical goods and cash. He enlisted his new girlfriend Coral-Lee Briscoe to help him get into Ms Tariku's flat where the terrifying ordeal began. After they had ransacked the home, Ms Tariku was frogmarched around the shops in Peckham, south London, and forced to try and pawn her computer.

FUGGLE: TEACHER AT OSBOURNE'S OLD SCHOOL WAS PAEDOPHILE

SUTTON, SURREY A former teacher at chancellor George Osborne's old school admitted a series of child sex offences today (weds). Classics master Anthony Fuggle, 57, pleaded guilty to 14 counts of making and possessing obscene images of young boys. Hundreds of pictures, mainly of boys between the ages of 12 and 16, were found on Fuggle's computer, Kingston Crown Court heard. He has denied three charges of making and possessing more extreme images and will now face a trial. But Judge Paul Dodgson was unable to fix a date for the hearing because prosecutors did not have a defence statement.

DLT SEX VICTIMS HAVE EXAGGERATED THEIR CLAIMS 'OUT OF ALL CONTEXT'

AYLESBURY, BUCKS The alleged sex victims of 'tactile' DJ Dave Lee Travis have exaggerated their claims 'out of all context,' a court heard today (weds). The 69-year-old former disc jockey has been branded a 'opportunist' who felt he had the 'perfect right' to grope young woman during the trial at Southwark Crown Court. Travis, charged under his real name David Griffin, allegedly molested three women who were 'many years younger' than him between 1990 and 2008. Today (WED) defence counsel Stephen Vullo QC reminded jurors being 'tactile' is 'not a crime'.
